ダンセイニ初版本のコレクションをしているうちに、購読した本の中に新聞の記事のスクラップが挟み込まれている物もありました。その中に、当時のダンセイニの死亡記事も出てきましたので、珍しいものでもあるので竹岡さんに翻訳してもらった上で、作品の題名や固有名詞の一部を一般に知られてる物に変更した以外はそのままでここに公開します。

ダブリン、10月26日（AP通信）──アイルランドの詩人にして小説家・劇作家であり、羊皮紙に鵞ペンで書いたダンセイニ卿が老人ホームで昨夜亡くなった。79歳だった。
ダンセイニ卿は米国に幅広く信奉者がおり、米国で講演を行うのが常だった。近年、自分の作品の読者は母国より米国の方が多いと彼は語っていた。
ひげの男爵はほぼ死の間際まで執筆活動を続けていた。
「ジョゼフ＝ジョーキンズ氏の紀行譚」や戯曲「もしもあの時」は傑作と見なされている。彼が執筆した散文や戯曲・小説は50巻以上に上る。
ダンセイニ卿の戯曲はほとんどが彼のいう「神秘の王国、地理学が終わって幻夢境が始まるところ」を扱ったものである。第一次世界大戦の直後に大流行した。
1919年にニューヨークで上演されたダンセイニの戯曲は大変な好評を博した。その演目には「アルギメネス王」「山の神々」「神々の笑い」「金文字の宣告」が含まれているが、まことに肌を粟立たせる作品であり、ついぞ存在したことのない太古の地から生じる恐怖の物語である。神々の存在を否定し、実在しないはずの神々によって罰せられる浅薄な人々を時として扱っている。
「山の神々」では、復讐心に燃えて近づいてくる神々の足音が雷鳴の如く轟いて劇場を揺るがす。「光の門」は、天国の門をこじ開けた二人組の死者の物語である。
突飛で伝説に満ちた戯曲や小説に初めて手を染めたとき、ダンセイニ卿は職業軍人で、陸軍将校だった。この時期、自分の時間の95％は軍務に費やされていたと彼は見積もっている。評論家のアーネスト＝ボイドはこのアイルランドの貴族を「狐狩りの達人……しかれども文才と繊細な想像力が備わっている……空想家そして当世風のスポーツマンという二人の人間が一カ所にいるのだ」と評している。
第18代のダンセイニ男爵であるエドワード＝ジョン＝モートン＝ドラックス＝プランケットは1878年7月24日に生まれた｡彼の一家が住んでいたのは､ミース州のダンセイニに1180年に築かれたダンセイニ城である。イートンを卒業後、彼は近衛歩兵連隊で多くの戦闘に参加した。後に彼はロイヤル＝イニスキリング＝フュージリア連隊に勤務した。
ダンセイニ卿は第一次世界大戦の初期に重傷を負った。そのとき、初期の成功作をたくさん著したのである。ダブリンのアビー劇場で彼は「掘出物」のひとつとなり、「おき忘れた帽子」のような一幕の戯曲が大いに注目を集めた。
ダンセイニ卿はロンドンの文壇には終生ほとんど関心を持たず、余裕ができてからは狩猟やクリケットやアイルランドの郷紳の嗜みに多くの時間を割いた。
彼はジャーナリズムにも手を染め、ロンドンの新聞二紙か三紙のために一日に一編ずつ詩を書いているといわれたこともある。自分は速筆だし、いいたいことは正確にわかっていて、書き上げたものを直すことは決してないと彼はいっていた。

「ジョゼフ＝ジョーキンズ氏の紀行譚」：翻訳では「魔法の国の旅人」だが、これは複数のジョーキンズ本から数編を抜き出してまとめたものなので原本そのままの物ではない為、ここでは原題の訳を置く事で区別している。
「神秘の王国、地理学が終わって幻夢境が始まるところ」：原文は"the mysterious kingdoms, where geography ends and fairyland begins."。Elflandでない事にちょっと注意（笑）
「1919年にニューヨークで」：余談ながら、ラヴクラフトがダンセイニの講演会を見に行ったのは1919年10月20日。

DUBLIN, Oct. 26(AP)--Lord Dunsany, Irish poet, novelist and dramaatist who wrote with a quill pen on parchment, died in a nursing home last night. He was 79 years old.
Lord Dunsany had a wide follwing in the United States, where he also lectures frequently. He said in recent years his works were more widely read there than in his own country.
The bearded baron continued to write almost until his death.
"The Travel Tales of Mr. Joseph Jorkens" and the Play "If," are considered to be his outstanding works. He was the author of more than fifty volumes of verse, plays and fiction.
Wrote of Mysterious Realms
Lord Dunsany's plays and stories dealt almost exclusively with what he called "the mysterious kingdoms, where geography ends and fairyland begins." They enjoyed considerable vogue immediately after World War I.
Dunsany plays produced in New York in 1919 received critical acclaim. They included "King Argimenes,""The Gods of the Mountain,""The Laughter of the Gods" and "The Golden Doom." They were genuine flesh-creepers; horrors from an ancient land that never really was. They sometimes dealt with frivolous persons who denied the existence of gods and were spectacularly done in by these supposedly nonexistent deities.
In "The Gods of the Mountain," the thunderous tramp of the vengefully approaching gods rocked the theatre. "The Gilttering Gate" was about two dead burglars who jimmied the gates of heavn.
When he first tried his hands at his fey and legend-soakes plays and tales, Lord Dunsany was a career army officer. He estimated that during this period, 95 per cent of his time was spent soldiering. The critic Ernest Boyd calld the Irish peer "a fox-hunting man * * * with literary talent and a sensitive imagination * * * the just a position of two people in one, the man of imagination and the fashionable sportman."
Edward John Moreton Drax Plunkket, eighteeth Baron Dunsany, was born on July 24, 1878. His family home was Dunsany Castle, built in 1180, at Dunsany in County Meath. After attending Eton he saw much fighting in the Coldstream Guards. Later he served in the Royal Inniskilling Fusilliers.
Wounderes in World War I
Lord Dunsany was dritically wounded in the early days of World War I. He wrote a number of his first literary successes then. He became one of the "discoveries" of the Abbey Theatre in Dublin, where his one-act plays such as "The Lost Silk Hat" attracted much attention.
Caring little for life in the literary circles of London and Dublin and, since he could afford it, Lord Dunsany spent much of his time hunting, playing cricket and engaging in the activies usual to the country gentry in Ireland.
He tried his hand at journalism and it was once said of him that he was writing a poem a day for two or three London newspapers. He said that he wrote rapidly, knew exactly what he wanted to say and never revised he had written.
